WHARARIKI BEACH: What can you say
about this beach that hasn
’t
been said before.
“Captivating,
Compelling, Wild dramatic landscape, drawn
so intensely, wind sculptured sands,
labrynthine tunnels, baby
seals right by you, 300 mill year old rock
accretions, Cathedral presence
”
are some of the
reactions. Every
turn is a picture postcard. just Google
“Wharariki
Beach Photos”.
To capture it at its best,
you need to be there say 2hours each side of
low water, calculate from Nelson tides,
approx 1hr earlier. From Takaka, take HW60
to Port Puponga, about 1 hr N, a small area
near the west end of Farewell Spit. Carry on
about 15 minutes on gravel to DOC car park
and toilets, adjacent to an Eco Camp, with a
20 min. walk to the beach.
The better walk is the one
that takes the Farm Park track, past Dune
and Nikau Lakes, to enter the beach at the
Western end, explore the beach and return by
the eastern end track from the sand dunes
back to the carpark. The back window photo
is early morning mist at the Eco camping
ground, which fades into insignificance
compared to the beach. This camp was
commissioned February 2010, and those who
may find the charges at the top end, could
perhaps stay at Farewell Gardens, a small
but friendly motorcamp back at Puponga. We
have stayed at both, and both have their own
particular advantages. Your call.
