MARBLE HILL: SH7 Lewis
Pass between Hanmer and Springs
Junction. (6.5k from Springs). A
large
DOC camp set in spectacular
mountain country, complete with
rivers and great beech forests.
DOC call it
West Coast, It is West of Lewis
Pass so that
’s
probably why.
You can park up
right amongst the beech trees or
if you prefer more sun, go out
on the grassy terraces. Better
to go a fair way into the
Reserve as it gets you away from
the road....we like quiet.. Good
toilets, water, bbq’s,
and rubbish facilities.
Good tramps, make sure you at
least do the short walk to the
Sluice Box, an impressive narrow
gorge, where the water colour
changes with the passing of day,
from green to blue. You can
carry on for the 3 hour
tramp to Lake Daniells, which
follows the Alfred River through
magnificent Red Beech forest.
Lots of bird
life and keep your eyes open for
a visit from the friendly Tom
Tit, a neat little black and
yellow fellow who
will hop around your feet, perch
on your stick, or pose for a
photo!!
