Lake Tekapo

LAKE TEKAPO: Stop into to Info Centre and pick up their map which shows 2 low cost camping areas

at Lake Alexandrina and Lake McGregor which are run by local residents groups. Another option is to

take the same road, Godley Peaks Rd, carry on past the Observatory, and instead of taking the left turn to

Lake McGregor, carry on another 1k to a group of fisherfolk caravans on the right by Lake Tekapo. There are

about 4 or 5 sites here, but no facilities at all.

The advantage is a more scenic outlook over the incredible colour of Lake Tekapo, described by most as Turquoise blue, due to the “Rockflour” in the water. We think it can be more of a fluroescent foam green, but that's just an opinion. Can be an amazing contrast as snow clouds came in dumping the first snow of the season (5-3-2011), and the rose hips in the foreground. Freedom.

Cross over the bridge and a good walk through a reserve along rural lakeside
