LAKE HERON: From
SH72 at Mt. Somers (where there is a neat
little inexpensive camping ground) take the
inland sealed road 23ks.to Hakatere, take
right unsealed road across wide open plains
abt. 15ks, past lookout, to a small
unpretentious, low cost, camping ground,
nestled between hills and sheltered from the
winds that come down the lake by trees.
This is part of the
Ashburton Lake district, and Heron is a
major conservation area, considered to be
the most important wetland wildlife habitat
left in the South Is.
Highly regarded by
fishermen for its Rainbow and Brown trout as
well as landlocked quinnat salmon. The view
out the back window is different, not
spectacular, but to see a long line of
caravans, and maybe only a couple
motorhomes, is almost a photo from times
past. However, a one minute walk past the
trees and the lake vista opens up. Toilets,
water and rubbish, and very very quiet.
