CABLE BAY: North of
Nelson on SH6, turn to coast at
Hira, and 6km out to this small
Holiday Park tucked under a hill
and native bush, adjacent to the
tidal estuary. A favourite spot
for Nelson folk, so either book
ahead or avoid peak holiday
periods. Sites 3,5 and 6 have
estuary views, 13 is between two
massive
Pukatea trees, and up the back,
overlook the family farm.
Native bush attracts lots of
birds, esp. Kereru. Original
name Schroders Mistake, which
allows one to speculate, changed
to Cable Bay as this was the
location of the first Cable
Station in NZ (1876).
The 3 hour Cable Bay Walkway
starts/finishes by the Park, a
stiff climb with great views
over Tasman Bay and Nelson
district, or a more leisurely
stroll along the natural Boulder
Bank which are unique to this
area.
The Bank and Park are both shown
in the area photo.
A fully equipped Park, family
owned and operated, fully
serviced, very friendly. A
no-exit road so extremely quiet.
Have their own small dump area.
